5 Don'ts of Boat Launching You Shouldn't Learn the Hard Way

Written by Sean Horsfall | April 23, 2025

Spring is here, and that means the boat ramps are about to get busy. Whether you're a seasoned pro or launching for the first time, there's a right (and wrong) way to handle yourself at the ramp. A little planning and some basic etiquette goes a long way, especially during the first few weekends of the season.

Don't rig at the ramp. One of the biggest mistakes? Pulling up to the ramp and then starting your prep. Instead, use the designated area (if there is one) or pull off somewhere out of the way. Load your gear, remove tie-downs, check the drain plug, and attach dock lines before you're holding up the line.

Don't forget the drain plug. This one is so important we had to repeat it. You'd be surprised how often this happens, but forgetting the plug can lead to a soggy (and stressful) start to your season. Some boaters even keep a spare on hand, just in case.

Don't take your time on the ramp. The ramp isn't the place to organize coolers, hunt for keys, or argue over who's holding the rope. If you're new to trailering or launching, try practicing in an empty parking lot before the big day. Be efficient, launch smoothly, park quickly, and be ready to move your boat to a courtesy dock or tie-off area so the next person can get in.

Don't leave your trailer blocking traffic. It's a boat ramp, not a pit stop. As soon as your boat is floating, park your trailer and return to help tie off, load passengers, or get moving.

Don't power off the trailer too aggressively. Gunning the throttle to get on or off the trailer can damage the ramp or cause erosion under the concrete. Use your winch to guide the boat and just enough throttle to float free.

At the end of the day, the goal is simple: launch your boat safely, be respectful of your fellow boaters, and get out there and enjoy the season.
