How you prepare for a Boat Show is relative to what stage of the boat buying process you are in. If this is the very start of your search, the show may just be about becoming comfortable with boats, dealers, and having conversations that help you decide what to look for. If you are further along, take the time to get ready for the show.

The best way to determine if you are getting a good deal at a boat show is to do your homework ahead of time. Pre “research” the brands and dealers now so that you come in with the upper hand. You are looking for the right boat, and the right dealer. This is essential as you need both; one without the other is a recipe for dissatisfaction.

Pre determine your budget before you come. There is a handy "affordability calculator" on DiscoverBoating.ca. Consider a monthly amount that you would be comfortable spending “on boating”.  It may fluctuate slightly depending on what you see and experience. A good dealer will help you through the costs associated with any given boat. Bring ID and a credit card (or other payment type) for potential deposit.

If you are in the market to buy now, or in the near future, then book a time as early as possible in the show. Weekdays have the least traffic, and will allow you time for better conversations. It will also leave time to come back of you want a second look.

Bring a notepad and a camera; take lots of notes and photos. After seeing a dizzying array of amazing boats and talking to dozens of people, the variations between them start to get fuzzy. Shoes that are easy to take on and off are recommended. Also consider using the coat check upon arrival so that you are as comfortable as possible.boat show

Consider buying a “Show Pass” so you can come back later in the show. The initial visit may be for information gathering only. If you create a good relationship with a marine dealer, don't hesitate to ask them for a complimentary pass for you and a friend or spouse to get back in later in the show. Ask for a dedicated appointment from that dealer and the other dealers you are comparing.

Once you go home and clear your thoughts, you should be able to narrow down your choices to a select few. Go back at a quiet time and finish with more focus.
